Sebastian Vettel believes the wet running last weekend in Melbourne will help the team this weekend should the expected rain arrive in Malaysia.
With limited wet running over winter testing, the teams got a chance to experience the 2013 wet spec Pirelli during free practice 3 and qualifying last weekend, and Vettel is confident this will work in Red Bull’s favour.
“We didn’t get that much [wet] running in winter, but I think we were fairly competitive in qualifying conditions so I think it was good to confirm that,” he told us in the Malaysian paddock on Thursday.
“There were a couple of occasions last year where we were struggling quite a bit in wet conditions. Because you don’t have the possibility from Saturday to Sunday to change the car, I think we have been quite happy.”
Malaysia always carries with it a high percentage of rain and the forecast this weekend is for late showers on both Saturday and Sunday. Despite being unsure how he will cope in race conditions should it be wet, he is looking forward to the challenge should the rain come.
“Whether or not we will be competitive in a wet race or the whole distance I don’t know as we simply haven’t done it. But the runs we did in winter and the runs we did in Melbourne were pretty good.”
