Nico Rosberg set the pace on the opening day of the second pre-season test in Barcelona, finishing ahead of Kimi Raikkonen and Fernando Alonso.
Rosberg suffered gearbox issues in the morning but bounced back in the afternoon to set the fastest time of 1:22.616 on medium tyres. Raikkonen was only 0.007s slower than the German, clocking a 1:22.623 in his Lotus. The Finn could only manage 44 laps and his best time was also set on the medium compound.
Alonso in his first test for 2013 set the most laps out of anyone with 110 laps. His time of 1:22.952 just edged out the Red Bull of Sebastian Vettel, who saw his car placed behind screens everytime he pitted.
Pastor Maldonado was behind the wheel of the new Williams FW35 and set the fifth fastest time of 1:23.733. Daniel Ricciardo continued the good form of Toro Rosso in sixth, a tenth of a second behind Maldonado.
Sergio Perez was seventh for McLaren, but the team focussed heavily on long runs in the MP4-28. Force India was eighth with Paul di Resta setting a 1:24.124 and completing a total of 82 laps.
The rear of the field was brought up by Sauber’s Esteban Gutierrez, Marussia’s Max Chilton and the Caterham of Charles Pic. Pic was forced to abandon his day after stopping out on track in the early afternoon.
Testing continues tomorrow.
