Lewis Hamilton achieved what he set out to by beating Sebastian Vettel’s fastest lap on Top Gear overnight.
Hamilton first appeared on the show in 2007 but could only manage a 1:44.7 in wet conditions in the “reasonably-priced car” segment. Sebastian Vettel held the previous record of 1:40.0.
Returning to the show, Hamilton clocked an impressive 1.42.9, beating times set by Vettel, Rubens Barrichello (1:44.3) and even The Stig (1:44.4)
Hamilton was delighted with the news.
“I’m really surprised!” Hamilton said. “It’s been months and you guys (Top Gear) wouldn’t even tell me and I was thinking to myself ‘I’m going to be so disappointed if I didn’t do a competitive time'”.
